Even Keel notes... (and why I can't entirely forsake AYCE...)

[Below I have struck out some of my falsely projected figures from yesterday.]

Even Keel 1A
70 min. (incl. warm-up), 225 lbs.

MOOD: felt excited and pretty focused; I'd like to get done closer to an hour next time around, though, since today I was feeling out the new regimen; plus I met a fairly cool, knowledgeable guy #bromance

FSQ: 5x5 @ 265 225, 215 lbs

db BP: 5, 5, 5, 5, 8 @ 90, 85 lbs

SDL: 6, 4, 2 3 @ 215, 225, 235 lbs

PU: reps x 3 12, 9, 6

db MP: 12, 9, 6 @ 60, 65, 70 55, 50, 50 lbs

spider curl: 12, 9, 6 @ 50, 60, 70 lbs

+ + +

Okay, yeah: dumbbells are harder. When I asked for a spot on my last set of bench presses today, I started to explain that I'm used to a barbell and dumbbells... "are way more work," the guy finished for me. I chuckled. "Kuh-RAY-zee!" I used to incorporate dumbbells more in the past, I guess, but over the past few months I got transfixed by the barbell. Don't get me wrong, the barbell is still awesome, and irreplaceable for some key lifts, but I can tell that this shift to dumbbells will be good for me.

As for my projections on the FSQ, I had forgotten that my previous performances around 265 lbs were done in triples or doubles. Anything over a triple is virtually a different lift. My AYCE triples had me doing a total of maybe 18 reps, whereas a 5x5 requires 25 reps, so I quickly realized that I'm going to need some time to bounce back from going stale last week and taking some days off. Indeed, I couldn't help but feeling that I'm going to want to maintain daily squats--once you go AYCE, you never go back!--, even if that's all I do at the gym, even for only ten minutes, on off days.

As for the barbell, I am choosing to use the thicker, powerlifting bar on everything but cleans and snatches, since there is only one (Olympic) bar at my gym with properly rolling sleeves. Gotta Get Grip. I used chalk on some SDL and PU, but over time I'm hoping to compensate with sheer grip strength.

Speaking of grip, I'm curious to see if, due to today's exertion, my grip session tomorrow is not spectacular. Stay tuned.

Possibly -->

Gym regimen - March 2014

Tuesday, 11 March 2014
231 lbs, 55 min.

Warm-up

(I)
DBP: 2-3-5, 5-5*-5* @ 235 lbs
(My spotter on the penultimate set surprised me by helping/exhorting me to go for 5 reps, and then I got the same treatment on the last set, for which I was more prepared. I dislike "grabby" spotters, but my pecs need forced reps, so it's all good.)
(II)
CX: 8-6-4 @ 115, 125, 135 lbs (CL/MP/FSQ)
(I didn't feel as "amped" on these as last time. But at least I got them done.)
(III)
SQ: 10, 6, 4 # 225, 275, 315 lbs
(I decided to "take it easy" by not adding any weight over against my last workout, but getting one more final rep was victory enough.)
(IV)
PU: 10, 8, 6 # bdw
db-P: 10, 9, 7 @ 65, 70, 75 lbs
(My arms straight-up dropped at (what thus became) the end of my penultimate and ultimate sets. Good stuff. I should get a spotter next time. FORCED REPS!)

+ + +

Having finally gotten my hands, or, feet, on a reliable scale, it seems that my initial weight measurements were heavy by a few pounds, which skewed my projected goals, as well as my measured weight gains along the way. The good news is that I have gained the same amount of lean-body mass since early January, but the bad news is, my gym's scale sucks.

As for some truly good news, my family is back from Taiwan! It was a wonderful reunion and, boy howdy, are my kids adorable. Of course, I'm now back on "active duty" as a husband and La Casa Bougis is a tornado of cleaning and furniture juggling. It's taken me some time to get used to having an infant and a toddler around again, so, between the cleaning, the projected costs we have for bringing the house into order, and the heightened awareness of my kids almost-tumbling-and-dropping-or-eating-things-left-and-right, my stress levels were pretty high when I headed to the gym this afternoon. As such, I decided to stick with my previous workout, so as to spare myself the mental irritation of having to think about a new workout scheme. I'll have to go for the deadlift next time.

Despite having gotten an unusually ample amount of sleep in the past few days except for one very late night, I could have gone for another day of rest: today's workout was very "mental" and I will not be back in the gym until I feel fully recovered (which allows for residual muscle soreness, by the way--it's the hormones and nervous system that you need to assess most carefully).

Mass Made Simple - Day 9

Saturday, 15 February 2014
229 lbs, 55 min

Warm-up
-
BP : 3, 3, 3, 3, 3* @ 225, 225, 225, 230, 235 lbs
[Had spotter help me on last rep of last triplet.]
One/arm press : 2-3-5 x 3 @ 55 lbs
Bat wings : 10 sec @ 65, 65, 65, 70, 70 lbs
[Bird-dog : 20 sec, 20 sec x 2 (tighter form)?]
-
Complex : 3 x 4 @ 125 lbs
-
SQ : 10, 10, 5, 5, 14 (15?)/6 @ 185, 185, 205, 205, 225/225 lbs
[I think I counted rep 12 at 225 lbs twice. Had that good ol' exertion headache by then.]

--------------------

While I haven't been posting the data, I have been sticking to the "recharge" workouts on the days after my recovery days. The last three or four times, I've used my 35 lbs KB to do swings, cleans, jerks, snatches, and windmills.

My weight keeps inching upwards, but, as always, eating is the hardest part of bulking. I'm off to buy some digestive aid and simethicone pills. They are to bulking what dairy aid pills are to lactose intolerance. They just make life easier.

I was feeling signs of fatigue in today's workout, so I will take three days off and hit it again on Wednesday. It's better to err on the side of rest rather than injury. My litmus test, believe it or not, is the bench press. I think my shoulders and chest could use one more day of recovery, though I'll probably just do two recharge days in a row after Sunday. My complexes felt really good, though I think I should have gone for 135 lbs, though I did one more complex than the three scheduled by Dan John. Squats were not as brutal as last time, and I went heavier than Dan John prescribed for this workout. Go big or go home, and all that.

Stay tuned.

+++

Today was a busy day. An appointment at Homeland Security about immigration. Then a breakfast with my mom and wife and daughter at the Cool Moose Cafe. Then a run to Sam's to get Pampers. Then setting up a bank account for me and my wife. So by the time I got to the gym, I was a bit edgy and had no "zip". Plus, the past few days I haven't slept enough. So today was one of those "mental" workouts.

I should have gone heavier on my 4th set of SQ. Even so, I made gains in terms of stamina and strength. Slow and steady.,..

I did the decline BP just to "confuse" my muscles. I got a spot on the 4th set, which he counted as 9 reps, but I think it was only 8, so I'll just not count his spotted 9th rep.

I only used chalk on the 4th set of SDL, and no hook grip. I discovered that the key to a good grip is to press the hands down hard around the bar with your elbows perpendicular to the floor. If you start with your elbows tucked at all towards your body, the bar will roll down the palm and onto the fingers as the arms straighten.

On circuit 2 I didn't overdo anything. Felt confident in all lifts.

The farmer walk was pretty grueling, but I can feel I've gained more stamina and power from it compared to the two prior efforts.

Happy Thanksgiving, stay tuned, and God bless!

Gym regimen - July 2012

Friday, 13 July 2012
modified Quick Mass workout
45 min. + 10 min., 103kg

I've been feeling a bit run down all week (last weekend was grueling and during the summer in Taiwan I tend to get "sweat colds" from the oscillations between heat, sweat, chills, warm winds, etc.), so I decided to mix things up for this workout. I was very pleased with the results. I basically split my rearranged order for the Quick Mass workout into two circuits (A and B––creative, huh?). I ended up tacking on a "second session" for my back and abs so I could try out a couple new toys I had made.

Warmup: motions, stretching, imaging, etc.

Session 1

SQ:  5, 4, 5 @ 100, 105, 110

FSQ: 5, 4, 5 @ 85, 90, 100

BP: 5, 4, 7* @ 90, 92.5, 95
[Spotter on last rep of last set. Should go a smidgen heavier next time.]

bb curl: 5, 5, 6 @ 45
[Should go a tad heavier next time.]

Leg curl: 5, 5, 3 @ 62
[Too heavy!!! Hope my hams are okay this weekend.]

Standing calf raise: 8, 8, 8 @ 105–110

"Session 2"
[The weights below are estimates, since I wasn't really counting them as part of my workout. I was just trying out my  handmade eagle loops.]

One-arm cable row: 10 @ 35

Eagle loop PU: ~10–15 reps @ bdw with various finger configurations

Eagle loop one-arm cable row: 10 @ 35

Ab pulldown: 12, 18 @ 30

Gym regimen - July 2012

Tuesday, 10 July 2012
Quick Mass workout
45–47 min., 104kg

This weekend I decided to rearrange the order of the Quick Mass workout. I wanted to be able give all I can to "the big lifts" (squat, bench press, row, bb curl, etc.). I read a lot of stuff by Rich Bryda this weekend, and had a lot of my ideas about strength training challenged. I highly recommend Bryda's materials. He gets right to the point and guarantees results without hype. While Bryda's persepctive (basically, "focus on the total number of reps in a given time period, especially as performed over several sets") took some of the wind out of the sails for me with this Quick Mass workout, I'm going to stick to it, since I know it's a short term tactic, and I know why I'm doing it.

Oh, and you'll notice my bodyweight is up to 104kg, maybe more by now. So I've accomplished one goal before returning to the USA.

I had a really draining weekend, and was out too late last night due to my birthday revelry, so I was not feeling 100% at all tonight. In any event, here's what I did….

Warmup: stretching, motions, imaging, etc.

SQ: 10 @ 120

Leg extension: 10 @ 95

bb curl: 10* @ 50
[Lots of body English on these –– but NO WONDER, since I did 50kg, falsely thinking I'd done the same weight last Thursday, though I'd really only done 42.5kg! D'oh! To make up for the eccentric body cheating, I did good concentric negatives on the last few reps.]

BP: 10* @ 90
[I'd originally wanted to do BP before curls, but "Sonic the Chesthog" was on the bench for a long time, and I just didn't feel like cutting in. These felt pretty good, and the spot on the final rep made it a nice "high intensity" set.]

Leg curl: 10 @ 56 (?)

Standing calf raise:  15 @ 105 (?)

Press: 10* @ 55
[I felt stronger on these last week, but, of course, I had done them before my bench and other exercises, as the original Quick Mass order had it.]

PU: 10*** @ bdw + 7.5
[I was getting pooped. Three decent negatives at the end.]

Seated tricep press: 12 @ 35
[Too light!]

Neutral grip semi-supine PU: 12 / 3 @ bdw
[I improvised these, since I didn't want to deal with an annoyingly easy seated cable row. I grabbed the neutral handles, rested my toes on the window ledge in front of the pullup tower, and rowed up semi-prone. Then I did three reps of neutral grip pullups. Fried.]

db pullover: 12 @ 25
[Really felt these. Even so, I should use the EZ bar next time for a heavier weight.]

Bench dip: 20
[Meh.]

Ab wheel: 20
[Forehead to the floor.]

Gym regimen - July 2012

Monday, 2 July 2012
Quick Mass workout
45–47 min., 101kg

This was a diagnostic workout. I've pretty much always done circuits with progressive intensity, so I'm instinctively skeptical about a one-set "HIT" workout like this. But I'm committed to it for at least a month, so I needed this workout to assess things like: what my "one-set max" is, how long the routine takes, how long I should rest between exercises, how to make some exercises intense enough to merit a true one-set effort as stipulated by the article the lead of which I'm taking, etc. The good thing is, this is basically a higher metabolic-load, double-progression regimen, so it's rooted in solid principles. As it turns out, I can afford a good minute of rest between each workout. I blazed through the first six exercises, but took a much needed 2–3 minute break before continuing. I was on calf raises after less than 40 minutes! Hence, I tacked on some aerobic ski machine time to reach at least 45 minutes. I'll go for a walk with intermittent skipping tomorrow, and then, because I must visit Taipei Friday through Sunday, I'll do the Tabata workout with "thrusters" and some headstands on Friday.

SQ - 9 @ 120
[Just right. Maybe 10 reps on Wed.]

Leg extension - 10 @ 71
[Too light!]

Leg curl - 10 @ 45
[Not too light (my hams have been sore since my DL last Thursday!), but I can go heavier next time.]

db pullover - 12 @ 25
[Too light! Will probably need the EZ bar to lift at least 40kg.]

Press - 8* @ 60
[Brutal! Body English on last few reps.]

Seated cable row - 15 @ 63
[Too light! Should use the bent-over row machine with big plates.]

BP - 9* @ 90
[Seemed about right. Spotter helped on last rep or so.]

Standing bb curl - 10 @ 40
[Just right! Kept my elbows tucked in and I squeezed high.]

Seated tricep press (EZ bar) - 10 @ 35
[Just right.]

PU - 9* @ bdw + 7.5
[Just about right. Did a couple negatives to finish.]

Chair dips - 10 @ bdw + 15
[Need to go heavier – this time I put a 15kg plate in my lap, which was awkward – or just go for high reps to failure.]

(Standing) Calf raises - 15 @ 90
[A little too light, or at least I didn't go low enough on the concentric return. Shoulds would help, as the platform rather cuts into the foot.]

Leg lifts - 15 / 10 / 15 / 15
[I did two sets of hanging leg lifts – fried my forearms! – then two sets of dip leg lifts. Pretty strict form, not knee raises.]
Ski machine - 6 min.
[I was pooped.]

Gym regimen - June 2012

Thursday, 28 June 2012
Even Keel (B)
50 min., 99kg

Warmup: stretching, motions with plates (stiff-legged rows [had my hams tight and sore the whole workout! sadface], squatting, overhand cable curls, pulldowns, etc.), etc.

Circuit 1

FSQ: 9, 6, 3 @ 75, 85, 100

IBP: 9, 6, 6* @ 70, 80, 85
[I felt insecure on these until the 3rd set. My pecs felt over-trained, maybe because I did some headstand and handstand training recently. Spotter helped on last 2 reps of 3rd set. My legs were shaking like leaves with exertion, but I squeezed the hell out of the bar and stabilized to get the bar up. Got some thumbs-up from a couple guys in the gym. Meh.]

DL: 9, 6, 6 @ 110, 120, 140
[Chalk is my friend! I killed the 3rd set. My back was achy a little while afterwards and my hams are going to hate me today and this weekend, but it was nice to dig deep on one of my favorite lifts. Got some more thumbs-up and mild "wooting" from some guys in the gym.]

Circuit 2

db BP: 12, 10, 10 @ 50kg
[I'm "forced" to use higher volume on these since I'm already using the heaviest db's in the gym. Once I start at my new high school teaching job, I'm sure I won't have the same problem in their weight room. I can't wait!]

Seated pulldown: 9, 6, 6 @ 111, 113, 115
[I'm already pulling the whole stack on these, too. Quite a challenge after all that deadlifting. High five!]

Seated cable curl (narrow grip): 10, 9, 8* @ 50, 54, 58
[Used a little body English on the last set but ended with a penitential negative. Good long-head pump!]

+ + +

Another typhoon is on the way, so the air has been awfully muggy and dusty. Maybe there are some foul ions in the mix, too. The point is that for the first 20 minutes or so of this workout, I was feeling alternately sluggish and wired. I've gone back to taking a B-complex multivitamin in the morning, and creatine monohydrate pre- and post-workout, so maybe I was a bit dehydrated at first. Around midway through, I started feeling more focused and energized. My dilemma was that I didn't want to slack - I never want to - but I also didn't want to train so hard going into my Quick Mass 3-day split regimen next Monday that  I'd begin depleted and quickly over-train. I decided to give my best and may the devil take care.

Gym regimen - June 2012

Sunday, 24 June 2012
Even Keel (A)
50 min., 99kg

Thumbs up, kiddies, my neck and abs were nice and tender today from yesterday's ab-core-calf-neck-grip melee. I keep losing weight, albeit incrementally (it's fat, I reckon), but my numbers keep going up (gradually), so I think I'm on the right track. I've been on the Even Keel regimen since a little after mid-May (I'm including some training I did at home before actually hitting the gym, as a necessary preparation after having been out of the gym too long). However, I do want to try a new regimen for July, which I shall explain below. My wife and I were up late last night (baby boss!), so this afternoon I took a much needed nap. I woke up at 1900 and got to the gym near 2000. It closes at 2100. So while there were very few people in the gym (hooray!), I was still a little groggy from the nap. It was, in short, a mental workout; but not without happy efforts.

Circuit 1

SQ: 10, 6, 5 @ 90, 105, 120
[I added an extra rep to set 1, and dug deep for 5 reps on set 3.]

BP: 10, 8, 6* @ 75, 85, 95
[Added a rep to set 1, 2 reps to set 2, and 3 reps to set 3, though I slight spotting on the tail-end of set 3. Definitely a new PR plateau. Felt very good.]

SDL: 10, 6, 5* @ 90, 110, 127.5
[Used straps on set 3. I meant to do 125kg, but accidentally put a 5kg plate on the right side instead of a 2.5kg plate, as on the left side. Split the difference.]

Circuit 2

Press: 9, 6, 3* @ 50, 55, 60
[Brutal effort. I guess my BP efforts had taken a lot out of my press, so I had to use a modified split jerk motion on set 3.]

db flye: 12, 10, 8 @ 36, 40.5, 45
[Giving my chest that extra attention, as always. I didn't feel I was overly activating my biceps on these, but, seeing as I did them on the fly (!), I ought to brush up on proper form and see how they feel next time I have a go.]

PU: 8/3, 8/3, Ø
[I did wide-grip pullups, then switched to neutral-grip pullups. By the third set, the gym was closing and I was pretty much "done". Not a tremendous showing, I know, but I think I adequately blasted my back and arms with the SDL. As I like to say and hope, with weight training, there's always next time (otherwise you're wasting your time)! Apropos, here's a good article that mentions the neutral-grip pullup in connection with arm development.]

+ + +

Now, about the new regimen I want to try in July.

New program I want to try for July: The 3-day split "Quick Mass" workout from Bodybuilding.com. The webpage also includes a handy printable format for log-keeping. It's designed to take 45-47 minutes, Mon/Wed/Fri, and all exercises are 1 set of 8-10 reps TO FAILURE. I will alternate form each Wed workout for * selected exercises. Off-days are for hula hoop, jump rope, walking, swimming, headstands, bridging, neck, AND GRIP CRUSHING! I want to go back to a 3-day split not only to increase my metabolic demands, but also to try something different that fits nicely into a month+.

Here's the goods:

*Barbell squat / FSQ -

Leg extension -

Leg curl -

db pullover -

Press -

*Seated cable row / Bent row -

BP -

*Standing bb curl / Close-grip spider curl -

Seated tricep press -

PU -

Dips -

(Standing) Calf raises -

Crunches / Leg lifts -

I'll do my Even Keel (B) workout this week, then start this Quick Mass workout next week (July 2).

Stay tuned.

Gym regimen - June 2012

Monday, 18 June 2012
Even Keel (B)
100 min., 99kg

This workout took longer than I like because the gym was more crowded than usual at 8pm. So I had to let the squat rats and partial-range-of-motion meatheads (PROMOmeats) dissipate before I could get down to bidness. Plus, at various times I had to observe my buddy's form on some lifts, which was cool, because at least he's improving. As for my bodyweight, I remain under 100kg, but am certainly getting stronger (cf. FSQ, IBP, DL, db BP, and cable curl compared to last time for the most salient gains).

+ + +
Warmup: exercise bike, stretching, motions, waiting, etc.

Circuit 1

FSQ: 9, 6, 3 @ 70kg, 82.5kg, 95kg

IBP: 9, 6, 3*/2* @ 70kg, 80kg, 90kg/80kg
[My buddy gave me a manly spot on the 3rd rep of the 3rd set, then peeled off 10kg for me to do an already drained and spotted 2 reps at 80kg. 好fu!]

DL: 9, 6, 5 @ 110kg, 125kg, 140kg
[CHALK! Chalk made so much of a difference! I really broke through on my 3rd set, without those debilitating grip problems, thanks to chalk. Still, I really need to figure out the hook grip again. Weird muscle amnesia.]

Circuit 2

Seated pulldown: 9, 6, 6 @ 50kg, 51kg, 52kg
[Felt surprisingly drained on these––thanks to the evil deadlift! :) ]

db BP: 12, 12, 12, 12* @ 45kg, 50kg, 50kg, 50kg
[I've got to keep giving my pecs special attention. It wasn't until the last rep of the (spontaneously extra) last set that I truly needed a spot. Thanks, Justin!]

supine cable curl: 50kg, 54.5kg, 59kg
[Used a "powerflex" plate (?). Good times. Body English on some of these reps is actually part of the pump: getting that handle all the way to the forehead and releasing slowly. Long head (close-grip) focus FTW.]

Gym regimen - June 2012

Tuesday, 5 June 2012
60 min., 100kg
Even Keel (A)

Warmup: motions, stretching, etc.

Circuit 1

SQ: 9, 6, 3 @ 90kg, 105kg, 120kg

BP: 9, 6, 5** @ 75kg, 85kg, 95kg
[My buddy spotted me on 4th rep of 3rd set and saved me on 5th rep of 3rd set heheh!]

SDL: 9, 6, 3* @ 100kg, 115kg, 130kg
[Used straps for 3rd set.]

Circuit 2

Press (EZ bar): 9, 6, 6 @ 45kg, 50kg, 55kg
[Felt alright, could have gone heavier, I'll give it a whirl next week.]

PU: 12, 11*, 11* @ bdw
[Felt pretty good, but, understandably, a lot of me is fried after my SQ-BP-SDL circuit.]

Spider curl (EZ bar): 9, 6, 3 @ 35kg, 40kg, 45kg
[These are awesome(ly evil) right after pullups.]

++++++++

I felt pretty charged up for this workout, and it was nice to get some "real weight" on the bar for my squat, after a long hiatus.

Also, new PR for bench press. I figure doing 3 solid reps 95kg on my last set of a circuit puts me in the 110kg 1RM range.

Stay tuned.

Gym regimen - March 2012

* * *

Tonight was an extemely “mental” workout. The A Circuit of my Even Keel regimen is simply more grueling than the B Circuit. I was nervous many times during the day––partially because I was imaging for the workout, partially because my wife feels she's ready to pop… hello, newborn! When I got to the gym, I felt totally uninpsired. I just did not want to workout. But I checked my data again from my previous A workout, ate some mouthfuls of honey, drank some water, and got on the ski machine, my mewling dread be damned.

It was also annoying that the students from the Phys. Ed. College powerlifting team were there again. So I had to work in on the SQ. There was also a huge guy doing DL, so I had to work in on that. And of course there was the “pec bouncer” (as I call him) on the BP, so I had to work in on that, too. C'est la vie, I know, I'm just saying it didn't boost my mental game.

I guess I knew, in a psychosomatic, pre-verbal way, that my SQ was going to be a new plateau for me, at least in this new season of weightlifting. And it was an epoch. For the first time in a long time, I can feel a little stiffness in my lower cervical spine, from the weight of the bar, and I could feel the ache of my legs after each set of SQ. Not pain, mind you, just a good threshing of the body.

A not insignificant mental deterrent was the fact that the students were squatting more than I was, albeit not always ass-to-grass (ATG). So I had to block out the carpings of my ego, state my weight, and just get under the bar to do what I knew I had to do for my own goals. An interesting aspect of this mind game, however, is that the students all used knee wraps, which I perhaps only tonight realized are to be wrapped so tightly that one cannot really bend one's knees while walking. According to this article, wraps can add as much as 10% to your SQ, so it was hearteaning to know I went “raw”––no wraps, no bands, and ATG on every rep.

I also felt a bit shaky on the BP, since I went heavier on my first two “run up” sets than I normally do. Getting 4 reps at 90kg on set 3, even with a little spotter help, was good enough for tonight.

The SDL was also frustrating, since I had to block out once more the egotistical urge to lift more than I wanted to, given the fact that “the big guy” was lifting, at one point, perhaps 200kg. Now, he used straps and was doing straight DL, while I was using a snatch grip and only used some chalk on my 3rd set. The SDL realls is humbling. The angle removes about four of your ten fingers from the grip, so it's hard to activate complete exertion for the lift itself. This weakness is based on a neurological reflex which inhibits full motor flexing given an insecure grip on an object (sort of like the”anticipatory” adjustment mechanism discussed in this (PDF) paper). The problem is parallel to squatting in “squishy” shoes or on an unstable surface. Your body just will not “commit” to moving so much weight if basic effector units feel compromised.

Anyway.

I had to re-adjust my grip on my 2nd and 3rd sets, and when I finished, the leader of the powerlifting pack advised me to use his wrist straps. “Next time,” I told him. The problem is not how much can I DL as such, since, if I used straps, I know I could put on another 30kg. The problem, rather, is that I prefer to let my grip catch up with my DL, at least until I get to a truly massive DL.

The basic problem is that I felt out of place tonight. Even using my chalk, I felt skittish, wiping it up as fastidiously as I'd seen the powerlifting kids do so a week before. But I want a gym where chalk is already on the plates, on the bars, on the floor! In due time…!

The press felt very solid, and I think I'm definitely approaching an APR (all-time personal record). … SCANNING… No, scratch that: I see that in April 2011, I finished with 6 reps at 65kg! Sometimes I even surprise myself.

PU were just wacky tonight, and another instance of me facing the urge to alter my parameters in light of what other guys were doing. Two guys, namely, were doing weighted PU, and I felt chummy enough to get into the mix. Of course both of them used straps. One guy, very lean and solid, did an impressive number of close-grip PU at bdw + 20kg. His buddy did partial PU with up to 35kg on the chain! Now, I'm all for pushing to new heights, but at the end of the day, I still believe the most basic test of PU ability is a wide-handle, strap-free PU with full range of motion and only “natural” kipping. By the 3rd set, I could barely do a 5-second negative, much less do a single rep. Still, it was nice to have “the buddy” spot me on my 2nd set and exchange thumbs up all around.

Lastly, I tried a new exercise tonight, perhaps of my own devising. It's basically a cable curl in which you sit on the floor, as if doing a cable row, but the key is to rest a plank of wood on your stomach and your triceps on the plank. This makes it as effective a concentration curl as the preacher bench, but removes that annoying lull at the top, since the cable keeps constant tension on your arms. It was also interesting to note how much space I had to curl into a good squeeze, sometimes curling all the way up to my forehead. This supine cable curl also seems mighty nice.

I threw in the powerset of db IBP just to give my chest, once again, that much more love.

All in all, I had a good workout, and need some days off before going back. Maybe by then I'll have held my daughter!

Gym regimen - February 2012

Thursday, 23 Feb 2012
Even Keel CIRCUIT A
~60 min., 97kg

Ski machine warmup: 5 min.

SQ 9, 6, 8 @ 85kg, 95kg, 110kg
[Perhaps it was the shoes, perhaps it was being rested, perhaps it was having some "real squat guys" in the gym with me, but, for whatever reason, I went for 5 extra reps on my last set––and could have done more. Good to know. Next time I do Even Keel A, I'll shoot for something like this: 9, 6, 3 @ 90kg, 100kg, 120kg.]

PU 9, 9, 6 @ bdw + 7kg, bdw + 7kg, bdw + 7kg

BP 9, 6, 4 @ 70kg, 82.5kg, 90kg

SDL 9, 6, 3 @ 100kg, 110kg, 130kg
[Back felt good, grip was the problem, of which more presently.]

Press 9, 6, 6* @ 38kg, 43kg, 48kg
[A dash of split-step body-cheating on the final rep, but closed with a nice negative.]

EZ-bar bench curl 9, 6, 7* @ 28kg, 33kg, 40kg
[Trainer guy spotted on the last 1 or 2 reps of set 3. Nice groans!]

BP: 6, 6, 5, 3 @ 50kg, 60kg, 70kg, 75kg
[I did this set on a whim, since I want to train my chest harder. Got a small spot on final two reps.]

+ + +

Good things: I went heavier on pretty much everything this time compared to my previous A workout.

Bad things: I might start going home first and then going to the gym later, since I'm pretty sure that now that the college semester has started, there will be a pack of serious college lifters in the gym probably every time I go. They are very welcoming about "working in", but it's a delay and a jam I might just prefer to avoid. My hunch is that, while the number of people in the gym might be greater at, say, 8pm, the number of people who will use what I want to use (esp. the SQ rack), so going later might shift the balance in my favor.

Another annoying thing is that it was muggy and rainy today, so gripping the bar for SDL was annoying. Fortunately, the college lifters let me use some of their chalk, though I felt restrained since it wasn't my own, and I'd rather have lots of chalk than just a little. I also had trouble "getting a grip on" the hook grip. I had it solidly "in hand" for 2 reps of my last set, but then things got slippery or just unwieldy.

Tonight I was reminded why weightlifting is truly a sport, not just a means to fitness. Real lifts (i.e. semi-/full-body resistance movements) require precision timing, full-body coordination, and total focus. Part of my problem is, I was focusing more on the moisture of the bar than on the placement of it in my fingers. NOTE: DL grip should be in the crux the finger joints, not in the palm.

I'm quite tired. Tomorrow, perhaps, I will train my grip. I'm of a mind to do so with heavy bar holds and heavy shrugs (ideally combined). I'm still not sure when I should incorporate my CoC grip training proper.

Stay tuned.

I went to the gym tonight on a whim, as I was feeling "rambunctious". I did it mainly to work out some soreness and just… cuz the gym's right on my way home, and stuff. Since it was an intuitive workout, you'll notice I paid little attention to exact weights and reps. (Indeed, the above data for Wednesday's workout just now is fudged for my own convenience.) It just so happened a buddy of mine was there (can I get a discount for introducing new memebrs!?), so hopefully we can spot each other when our schedules overlap.

Sunday I decided to switch my neck training from my harness iso's to plate lifts, not only so I can be more precise in my progression, but also because I think my neck will respond better than to the harness for gains in mass and strength––just like any muscle tissue. The harness is good for working the whole spinal shaft and core, but the db neck lifts really isolate the muscle and allow for greater range of motion. I really felt it the next day (w00t)! Last night's lifts didn't leave me as sore, but there's always "neckst" time.

Tonight I was really hoping to do some heavy shrugs (a pleonasm, in my book), but there was a pack of admittedly serious young squatters on the rack so I just made do with 美力's rather paltry dumbbell section. I did the reverse leg press to give my lower back some blood flow but didn't want to go to heavy on any big muscles, since I intend to do my Even Keel A workout tomorrow night.

Oh, and last night on the way home, I saw an MMA dojo and dropped in for information. It's not expensive, but is probably not a prudent investment at this juncture. Even so, I had huge respect for the establishment as soon as I perused their equipment: dozens of jump ropes, medicine balls, punching bags, Smith machine for bench and squat, mats for grappling, etc. I'd love to get some basic combat training, though my heart still pines for my old judo lessons. We'll see. God help me, I'm going to use my health while I still have it.

Stay tuned.

Gym regimen - February 2012

Wednesday, 15 Feb 2012
Even Keel CIRCUIT A
60 min., 96kg

Squat 9, 6, 6 @ 80kg, 90kg, 105kg
[Evinced some good gym-man grunts/groans on the last few reps.]

Pullup 12, 8, 8* @ bdw, bdw + 5kg, bdw + 10kg
[Rep 8 of set 3 was a negative.]

Bench press 9, 6, 3* @ 65kg, 80kg, 90kg
[Spot for last rep of set 3.]

Snatch DL 8, 6, 3 @ 85kg, 90kg, 105kg
[Big drop from last time, most likely due to a strained left erector spinae.]

Standing military press 9, 6, 3* @ 30kg, 45kg, 55kg
[A dash of body cheating on the last rep, but closed with a nice negative.]

Bench EZ curl 9, 6, 8 @ 24kg, 28kg, 38kg
[I've decided I will do accessory lifts –– i.e. moves ancillary to the Big Three –– closer to failure than according to a strict rep system. If I can do more on the press, I'll do more. More on the curl, more curls. Etc. This also ended with some nice grunts/groans for the audience.]

+ + +

I almost did not work out tonight, as I have been depressed for days about some family issues. But I'm glad I went. The endorphins did me well, and it's always nice to follow through with one's commitments. I think I'll be ready for the gym on Saturday, but I need to stay off the deadlift, I think, for at least a week. In lieu of it, I'll do some Supermans, hula hooping, bird dogs, incline/decline back bridges, etc.

Stay tuned.

Happily enough, the gym (台中美力健身房) was not very crowded when I arrived at 1830. However, the weather was miserable today, so fewer people than usual might have come today. I'll have to see what it's like next week, when the weather, hopefully, is nicer. I asked the owner and he said the busiest time is about 2000, since most people are just getting off work and/or eating dinner at 1830, so it looks like my after-work workout will work out, after all (!).

It's a small gym, which is probably its greatest defect, and I had minute flashes of annoyance as I got familiar with the equipment, navigating the passages, and handling the plates. It's all good: I'll just need to be patient and just improve my transitions. The gym is very well stocked and everyone there seems gym-savvy and courteous.

As I said, tonight's was a diagnostic workout, so, frankly, I was fully prepared to suck. Fortunately, though, I was surprised at how strong I seemed to be, even after half a year out of the gym. Indeed, after my first set of pullups, at least one person applauded and more than a couple time various people chatted openly about my power of gave me vigorous thumbs-up. There was one giant younger fellow there, whom I am fairly certain I trained against years ago in judo. He's an impressive specimen, though I note he worked his chest and abs, with some stair machine, for pretty much the entire duration of my workout, so he must be more of a bodybuilder and he's definitely a gym rat. I ain't got time for all that, alas!

Squatting felt good, and it's awesome to have a proper squat rack! (It was slanted from the wall a bit, though, which made foot placement a little confusing, but I will adjust it next time and hone my own perception, regardless.)

Evidently my rope pullups paid off, since I felt pretty strong on pullups tonight.

The biggest surprise was how strong I felt on the bench. A solid 90kg rep in my last set after half a year away, hooray!

The deadlift is probably my biggest disappointment, mainly because the rack at the gym is narrow and doesn't allow me to put the bar on the floor. This is because there are catch bars fixed about a foot above the floor, so not only can I not put the bar on the floor, but I also can't do a very wide snatch grip, unless, I suppose, I want to crush my fingers. The best solution I see for now is to stand on a couple flat plates to get my feet approximately level with the plates on the bar. As noted above, the straps at 美力 are narrow and really cut into my wrists. I'm afraid the owner won't like me using chalk, either, so I'll have to find a solution in due time. Meanwhile, I'll use my one good strap (no idea where the other went!) and cushion my other wrist with a sweat band.

I stunned a couple people with my standing press, which did feel good, but I've lost a good 10kg from where I left off last year. I like doing strict form, which means heels and toes 90°apart. I may have been overreaching tonight, since I let my lower back go concave a few times.

Finally, I was confused about how much to curl, so I'll have to keep experimenting to find the right weight.

+ + +

Higher volume was not simply going through the motions. A real challenge, in fact, on the big lifts, at least. I will go even lighter next week on a higher rep volume (e.g. 15, 12, 9). My forearms are coming along, not so creaky or "skittish" as before. I got a Heavy Grips 150 (about 17 lbs. lighter than a CoC #1.5) last night and did give it a shot. I got an easy-ish 4 closes or so with my right hand and a much less authoritative 2 closes with my left hand. I will do some calisthenics and rope skipping this evening, just to keep my spirits and momentum up. I will save some non-crushing grip work for tomorrow, then do Even Keel 2 Monday or Tuesday.

Gym regimen - May 2011

Even Keel Workout 2
50 mins, 97kg

WARMUP

CIRCUIT:

SQ: 8, 6, 4 @ 100kg, 112.5kg, 122.5kg
[When I asked the owner for a spot, he declined, saying, "That's… too dangerous. Do you really… need to do that heavy? We have a rack, etc." Weak sauce!]

Incline BP: 8, 6, 5* @ 70kg, 77.5kg, 85kg; Reverse-grip BP: 25 @ 40kg [LINK]
[Spotter on set 3. He and another guy commented on "how heavy" it was, "too heavy," might better I get a more suitable spotter next time. Weak sauce again! Reverse BP was a little awkward, as expected, but I think it will help my upper pecs.]

DL: 8, 6, 6* @ 110kg, 130kg, 160kg
[Straps on set 3. Quite a pump.]

Bar pushdown: 10, 8, 6 @ 35kg, 40kg, 45kg

Seated lever row: 10, 8, 8 @ 100kg, 115kg, 130kg

Seated db curl: 8, 6, 6 @ 18kg, 22kg, 22kg

+ + +

I think I should try db DLs this week or next week. Maybe it will simulate the feeling of a trap bar. I won't train grip again until Wednesday and will train Even Keel 1 Thursday. Saturday I'll train grip and do some floor presses (incl. reverse grips), core work, overhead squats, all lightish stuff, at home. I'm hoping to complete ten more chapters of SCG by next Monday. Stay tuned. It's nice not being distracted by Facebook anymore.

Gym regimen - May 2011

Even-Keel Workout 1
50 mins, 97kg

WARMUP

CIRCUIT:

Pullup: 15, 14, 13
[I kept my form tighter, with less quasi-kipping. I think I should try weighted pullups next time.]

Bench press: 10, 8, 6* @ 75kg, 85kg, 92.5kg
[Spotter on last couple reps of set 3. Gains, baby, gains! Next week I'd like to try 8, 6, 4 @ 75kg, 80kg, 95kg.]

Snatch deadlift: 10, 6, 6* @ 100kg, 115kg, 130kg
[Straps on set 3. Such an awesome pump, I was tingling! I would like to use straps on set 3 of my DL next week and do 160kg. Next week: 8, 6, 4 @ 110kg, 120kg, 130kg.]

Military press: 9, 8, 6 @ 50kg, 55kg, 65kg
[A good bit of body English on set 3, but solid eccentric control. Next week stick to 8, 6, 4 with tight form.]

Spider curl: 10, 8, 8 @ 37.5kg, 42.5kg, 47.5kg
[Am I using a cheat on these? Cf. VIDEO. I see that I need to set the bench closer to horizontal and have the bar farther away from the frame. I should go lighter and keep tighter form. Next week 10, 8, 6 @ 35kg, 40kg, 45kg 好嗎?]

Front squat: 10, 6, 3 @ 75kg, 80kg, 85kg
[Sets 2 and 3 felt very good. Set 3 took all I had and my wrists were sore from the bending. Must keep elbows up! Next week do 8, 6, 4 @ same weights.]

* * *

I got a good night of early sleep last night, and felt good this morning. I brought my "grip pack" to the gym today: my bag of crushers and assorted gear. No one could close the CoC #1.5 and they had nearly as much trouble with my Heavy Red. I left my heavy-negative device there and I might train with it Saturday.

After the gym, I had lunch with a friend and then he visited my place to check out my homemade "toys". While showing him the #1.5, I closed it with my right hand, and with some authority. Gains! My left hand is still lagging by a hair.

The night before last I used half (yes, half) of my thick barbell to do floor presses––quite an experience! I loaded 30–35kg on one end, attached a handle outside the plates with a coupling, and held the other, thick end in my other hand. I did 4 sets of high reps (approx. 15/15, 10/10, 15/15, 15/15). Good stuff.

Next week I need to stick to a strict 8, 6, 4 rep-pattern but set the weight a little higher on all fronts.

Stay tuned.
